about

Josh:

"GYO started out as a spirited conversation late one night at Latitude festival: three of us hyped after seeing Sylvan Esso, talking about our reclaiming and celebrating out identities ."

Shanaz

"When I wrote the first few lines of Get Your Own, I was thinking about all the spaces I've found myself in, where as much as I may have tried to shrink and fit in, my identity meant that I was literally too colourful - as a black person and as a queer person - to illicit anything but stares or judgement. Every few years I see parts of myself monetised and resold by the very entities that held no room for me in the past. Get Your Own is really about wearing my identity like it's the finest couture and sticking two-fingers up to anyone who tries to replicate it."

Tom

"We’re still lliving in a time where queer signifiers are being appropriated by straight people. Our language. Our clothes. Our movement. But for a lot of these people, being perceived as “sus” or “gay” is still a big fear. We really haven’t come very far at all. This song is a big eff you to all those people. You can dress like me. Move like me. Talk like me. But you can never be me. You’re basic. Sorry."

lyrics

Get Your Own

These are just two dollar shades
And I’m just a fool in disguise as a somebody
all of the world is a stage and I know that they’re watching

And this ain’t a dance it’s my walk
And I’m just a misfit with all the right talk
Every moment’s a book
It’s a movie
keep watching

Cuz you can’t buy this here
You can’t buy this here
This here is grown in the darkest corners of the city

You can’t buy this here
You can’t buy this here
This here is hustle and struggle
Just wrapped up in glitter
So get your own

This ain’t a song
It’s my jam
This one’s my culture, now
This how I let that poison out
This ain’t a gang
It’s my fam
It’s my company
I beg you don’t come for me!

Cuz you can’t have this here
No you can’t have this here
This one’s my own
Go get your own

No, you can’t have this here
You can’t have this here
This one’s my own
Go get your own
Go get your own

I got that swish
In my wrist
I turn heads
When I walk
Uh huh
Can’t be sold
It’s my life
It’s all mine

Cuz you can’t buy this here
You can’t buy this here
This here is grown in the darkest corners of the city

You can’t buy this here
You can’t buy this here
This here is hustle and struggle
Just wrapped up in glitter
So get your own
